Mayor Bonnette and Members of Council join representatives of the Georgetown

Slopitch League (GSL) to celebrate the groundbreaking of the first slopitch

diamond at the Trafalgar Sports Park on 17 Side Road. The diamond is the

latest community collaboration, with the Georgetown Slopitch League

contributing $100,000.00 to the total project cost of just under $ 439,000.00.

The works are being completed by DDR Landscape Contractors Limited of

Oakville, and include an unlit major ball diamond, parking, roadworks and

landscaping.

"This is another great example of the Town working with our local sports

community to develop new facilities within the Town" said Mayor Rick Bonnette.

"We're pleased to partner with the GSL and thank them for their role in making

this phase of the sports park a reality." Georgetown Sloptich League President

Tim Abbott added "Georgetown Slopitch League is pleased to participate in the

construction of a new baseball diamond. The $100,000 donated by members of

our league will contribute to creating a sports facility that will service current and

future baseball enthusiasts."

The Trafalgar Sports Park Master Plan approved by Council in 2002 provides for

a total of four major ball diamonds. The recent Recreation and Parks Strategic

Action Plan recommended the development of ball diamonds to accommodate

the demand for adult slo-pitch, and a potential deficit of two diamonds by 2016

based on best planning estimates.

"The development of Trafalgar Sports Park has been a challenge given the

scope of the work involved" noted Recreation and Parks Director Terry Alyman "

and we're pleased that the GSL has made such a substantial contribution in

order for the Town to be able to move forward on this phase of development."

The Town's capital forecast includes a further six phases of development at

Trafalgar Sports Park totaling close to 9 million dollars.

Works is scheduled to commence in the coming week with substantial

completion expected by the end of this August.
